RIVER by MARIE YORK - #RELEASEDAY #BOOKREVIEW

Title:  River
Series:  Deadly Intent Book #1
Author:   Marie York
Release Date: September 27, 2015

River Ryan is used to getting his way. Girls, parties, drugs... As the lead singer of Deadly Intent, he's got the rockstar lifestyle down pat. But when journalist, Harper James, shows up to follow the band around for an article, River just sees her as another groupie. Little does he know, Harper is actually a spy for the label, and they want him out.

An unlikely love story about love on the road and how two people who couldn't be more different actually fit together perfectly.

River is the first book in Marie York's new Deadly Intent Series.  Deadly Intent is the hottest rock band around and River Ryan is the lead singer.  River is his story.

In the book we are introduced to the other members of the band Deadly Intent, but the main focus is on River.  At first glance River is not a very likeable hero.  He's into drugs, alcohol, and women.  He feels like he's entitled because he's a rock star.  He knows girls like him and want him and he takes advantage of that.  He also snorts cocaine and drinks up a storm.  I'll be honest and say that at the beginning of the book I really had no respect for River and didn't see that changing.

Then Harper entered.  At first I thinks he felt the same way I did about River.  She thought he was a complete jerk (and he was).  He slammed the door in her face and was outright rude to her.  Harper is a reporter for Rock Star magazine.  She's hired to go on tour with the band and to do an indepth report on them.  River sees her as paparazzi and wants her to leave.

But Harper eventually manages to see through River's public persona.  She meets the man beneath and sees why he is the way he is.  He and all the band members have dark pasts.  Since Harper has her own issues she understands.  They manage to heal each other.

Of course, there is a betrayal in the book, but once they get past that you know that they'll be together forever.

I really liked the first book in this series and can't wait to read more about the Deadly Intent band.  I give River 4 STARS!

My life was full of nevers.

It was never supposed to go this way. I was never supposed to lose Mom so soon. I was never supposed to worry about making ends meet, to worry about losing the farm. I never thought I’d be working a job I hate, with a boss who was more interested in what was under my shirt than in my head. Saving neglected and abused horses had been my whole life. It was my reprieve, my sanity, my last saving grace in a cruel world. I never thought I’d grow to resent it, but I guess there is a first for everything.

Then I met him.

The Hollywood playboy. The entitled, cocky asshole that I can’t get out of my head. I never thought there could be more to him than sex appeal and an infamous reputation of loving and leaving. I never thought I’d fall for him, put my heart on the line, and risk letting him completely destroy me.

But you know what they tell you…never say never.

NSN - 2

A tear rolls down her cheek and she bites her lip, trying not to cry. Then her face breaks and her shoulders slump forward. I stand there, shaking, terrified of the raw emotion. My heart breaks for her and I rush forward, wrapping her in my arms as she sobs. It’s beautiful and it’s tragic, and in that moment, I’ve never felt anything more real.
The pain. The sorrow. Her loss. The darkness I try to hard to keep out, that I fight tooth and nail but can never fully avoid. I hold her and feel it all. It swarms around me, filling me, hurting me, opening my eyes. I realize everything I’ve done to desperately hold it together slowly chipped away at me until there was nothing left, nothing but a shell of a man with an empty heart that I never though was capable of feeling anything but hurt. A heart I thought was never worthy of a second chance, was never capable of redemption.
It’s then that I realize I never, ever want to let her go.
And it’s crazy, because I don’t know her—really know her—but there is something so intimate about holding someone as they cry. It exposes so much, and you can’t hold back as the tears fall and the sadness comes out in waves. I feel my own eyes mist over. I close them and cradle Haley close to me.
“There’s nothing wrong with you,” I tell her. “I promise you that.”
“Look at me,” she repeats. “Have you ever had a date end this way?”
“Our date didn’t even start,” I say. “And hey, you didn’t go crazy and shave your head, so I say you’re doing all right.”
She laughs, and her arms slowly wrap around me. Something inside me relaxes. I sit and pull her onto my lap and we stay there in silence for a few minutes. Gently, I push her hair out of her face. “Want that drink now?” She laughs again and nods.
“I need that drink now.” She stands up and wipes her eyes, smearing her makeup across her cheeks. “And really, I won’t hold it against you or call the tabloids on you if you drop me off at home and call it a night.”
Tabloids? The word is jarring. For a few minutes I was the real Aiden again…and I didn’t mind. “It’s up to you, Haley. I’m not mad or upset, so don’t worry. I don’t like seeing you sad, and if you’d like, I want to try and cheer you up.”
“I’d like that.”
I stand and drape my arm around her. “Are you hungry? I can go get the food.”
“I am. And thanks, Aiden. I…I don’t know.”
“What?” I probe.
“I’m surprised by your kindness.”
“Ouch,” I say with a chuckle. “Thanks?”
She smiles and takes a step toward the restaurant. “Hey, you can’t really blame me, can you?”

I can’t, because I’ve fooled the world—and at times, myself—about who I really am. The partying, the women, the excessive spending, and run-ins with the American law…okay, so maybe I had a reputation. “No, I can’t. But I’m glad I surprised you.”

  Hard as Steel
Title:  Hard as Steel
Series:  A Hard Ink/Raven Riders Crossover Novella
Author:  Laura Kaye
Release Date:  September 22, 2015

After identifying her employer's dangerous enemies, Jessica Jakes takes refuge at the compound of the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club. Fellow Hard Ink tattooist and Raven leader Ike Young promises to keep Jess safe for as long as it takes, which would be perfect if his close, personal, round-the-clock protection didn't make it so hard to hide just how much she wants him—and always has.

Ike Young loved and lost a woman in trouble once before. The last thing he needs is alone time with the sexiest and feistiest woman he's ever known, one he's purposely kept at a distance for years. Now, Ike's not sure he can keep his hands or his heart to himself—or that he even wants to anymore. And that means he has to do whatever it takes to hold on to Jess forever.

Hard As Steel - Tour Teaser 2

I’m thrilled to be here celebrating the release of my 21st book, HARD AS STEEL! After a midnight break-in at her apartment, close friends and Hard Ink Tattoo co-workers Ike Young and Jessica Jakes are forced into hiding—and forced to confront the feelings they’ve always denied for one another. I have always adored friends-to-lovers and forced proximity stories, and HARD AS STEEL delivers that and more, including a taste of both my award-winning and best-selling Hard Ink and upcoming Raven Riders series! Check out this excerpt:

“Night,” she said, heading up the steps.
“Night,” he replied, watching her hips sway in a pair of silky black shorts. Combined with the form-fitting black tank top and those perfect-for-grabbing pigtails, she was going to make it damn hard for him to fall asleep tonight.
Damn hard, indeed.
He turned out the light and went horizontal, the soft couch so comfortable against his sore back even though it was a little too short to fit his whole body. He adjusted his erection, willing it to get with the no-sex-with-Jess program. Problem was, in the quiet darkness, Ike could hear her moving around in the loft. Soft footsteps on the wood floor. The shifting of covers. The squeaking of the box spring. And all that did was invite his imagination out to play. Easy since he had so much material to work with after sleeping with Jess wrapped around him the past two nights.
His shoulders and chest knew what the silk of her hair felt like when it skimmed over his skin. His hip knew the heat of her core when she slept with her knee across his thighs. His hands had memorized the curve of her lower back and the shape of her biceps and just how much of her luscious ass he could fit in his palms.
Ike knew what her mouth tasted like, how tight her legs could wrap around his waist, and how fucking beautiful the combination of ink and steel was on her skin.
Jesus, his cock was never going to let him go to sleep at this rate.
And was it fucking hot in here or what? He tossed the cover off, wishing he had a ceiling fan downstairs, too. Something for the to-do list around this place.
Ike sighed and flung his hand over his head. And wondered why the hell he was torturing himself this way.
He could just go up there and get in the bed—and take what he wanted, and what he knew Jess would be only too happy to give. Neither of them was immune to the mutual attraction that had always been there between them. And her reaction to his kiss the other day made it crystal fucking clear that she was waiting for him to make his move.
Jess had plenty of one-night stands and casual hook-ups. Ike knew she was perfectly capable of handling that kind of relationship.
Except.
Except Ike wasn’t a clueless idiot, and he wasn’t in the habit of doing things he knew damn right well would hurt someone he cared about. Jess wore her emotions like she wore her ink—out loud and unapologetically. He had a pretty good idea that she was rocking some more-than-friendly and more-than-physical feelings for him. Right now, she thought them unrequited, and that kept a kind of sexually tense equilibrium between them. But if he let himself off the leash—even just once—he’d very likely raise and dash her hopes, give her all kinds of mixed signals, and screw things up royally between them.
He shook his head and heaved a deep breath. If he wasn’t going to go the distance with her, he had no business taking the first step.

I was sad when I finished the last book in the Hard Ink Series.  If you look through my reviews you'll know that I loved all of those books.   Then I read Laura Kaye's announcement that she was going to be starting a new series with the Raven Riders.  And I was happy again!

Hard as Steel is similar to the Hard Ink books in that some of the same characters appear (i.e., Ike and Jess).  It takes place at the same time as the Hard Ink Books so we get to see different points of view on what happens.  But these characters are just little bit edgier than the Hard Ink Characters.  While the Hard Ink boys had some bad boy, they were all pretty tame.

Ike is a member of the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club.  He's tatted and tough.  He has a criminal background and he skirts the law.  Jess is also tough and tatted.  She is not your typical girl next door.  While she had a fairly happy childhood, she has never been one to conform to society.  I had thought (early on when reading the Hard Ink books) that Jess and Jeremy had something going on, but after reading Hard as Steel it's obvious, that while Jess loves Jeremy has a friend, she is in love with Ike.

It's as though the two are meant for each other.  They share the same goals and ideas.  They love tattoos and don't want to be like everyone else.  I've read lots of books about tattooed guys and while I don't have tattoos I do find them sexy.  I haven't read many books about tattooed women so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about Jess.  I can say now that I loved her.  She's tough but sensitive.  She's edgy but girly.  She many not look like a typical heroine, but she's tender and sweet.  Ike, too, is adorable.  He has a vibe of a bad guy, but underneath he really cares and proves it.

This was a quick read (or at least it was for me in that I couldn't put it down) and a definite great start to a new series.  Bring on the Raven Riders!  I give Hard as Steel FIVE STARS!

They stared at each for a long moment. Jess went from feeling amused to awkward to observed…and that made her hot. Especially as she was standing there in nothing but a towel.

As if he could hear her thoughts, Ike’s gaze slowly ran down her neck to her chest. She wiped at something there and the wetness on the fingers told her it had been a droplet of water from her hair. Ike watched the movement of her hand openly, hungrily, and his desire made her bold, daring, hungry in return.

Without giving herself time to second guess the idea, she reached out and lightly dragged her wet fingers against his bottom lip.

And it was like she’d unleashed a beast.

Ike grabbed her wrist and hauled her to him. He was on her everywhere. His hands in her hair, on her back, grabbing her ass and lifting her up. His tongue licked the exact route that water droplet had taken, from chest to neck to ear. And then he was kissing her, fucking her mouth with his tongue, absolutely devouring her.

Jess held on like her life depended on it, and at some point she became aware of the breeze on her bare skin. She’d dropped the towel, which meant she was totally buck-ass naked in Ike’s big arms, and she couldn’t have cared less.

Ike licked her mouth, sucked her tongue, nipped at her lips. He turned and made for the stairs, and Jess thought she might die from sheer joy and anticipation. He tasted like strength and sin and sex, and she tightened her legs around his hips as he carried her to the loft, eager to see if all of him tasted so good—or even better.

When they reached the second floor, Ike growled low in his throat and his grip tightened on her on her ass, his fingers digging in. She moaned and—

Cool air from the ceiling fan washed over Jess as Ike dropped her onto the bed—and promptly turned around to leave. Jess was so stunned she couldn’t speak. Just as he hit the top of the steps, he said, “Don’t fucking tease me, Jessica. I’m trying to do right by you, but I’m still just a goddamned man.”
