A Life Less Broken by Margaret McHeyzer - #SALEBLITZ, #GIVEAWAY #BOOKREVIEW

Title: A Life Less Broken
Author: Margaret McHeyzer
 Release Date: May 8, 2014

On a day like any other, Allyn Sommers went off to work, not knowing that her life was about to be irrevocably and horrifically altered.

Three years later, Allyn is still a prisoner in her own home held captive by harrowing fear. Broken and damaged, Allyn seeks help from someone that fate brought her.

Dr. Dominic Shriver is a psychiatrist who’s drawn to difficult cases. He must push past his own personal battles to help Allyn fight her monsters and nightmares.

Is Dr. Shriver the answer to her healing?

Can Allyn overcome the broken?

Contains distressing content. Only suitable for 18+. Standalone.

While I read a lot of dark romance books that's not what this was.  This was darker than almost anything I've read and is definitely not for everyone.  Allyn is completely shattered.  Her life as she knew it, was brutally taken away from her three years ago.  She can't cope in the real world.  She's more broken than any character I've read about before.

Then she sees a TV show and learns about a psychiatrist who helps with trauma patients.  As broken as she is, she finds the courage to make the call for help. Dr. Dominic Shriver turns out to be her savior.  He helps Allyn see past the scars and trauma and to realize that she really can lead a full life.  He's much older than Allyn, and doctor/patient lines are blurred, but it's worth it.  He's amazing and helps Allyn realizes that she, too, is amazing.

This was a very tough book to read.  About 3/4 of the way through the book it gets even tougher, when Allyn is forced to confront her past.  I won't go into detail, but Dominic is perfect with her.  Helping her cope and helping her recover.  His loyalty is unquestionable.

I'm not sure this is the kind of book I could read everyday (it's much too emotional), but I truly loved it and think Margaret McHeyzer did a great job.  I give A Life Less Broken 4 1/2 STARS!

**Bound by custom or unique by choice.**

There's something about the written word that's pure magic.

Possibly it's the fact that there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, and they can create something so beautiful or so empowering that they're able to change our lives.

How important is it that we break suit and stretch our minds?

I like to think of myself as 'unique'. My stories aren't for everyone, and sometimes I may push what you believe to be 'normal'.

Normal is subjective.

I prefer to be known as a person who's never been 'bound by custom' but is 'unique by choice'.

Until next time

Alexis Noelle lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her husband, three kids, and two dogs. On top a writing career, she is a full-time student and a full-time mom. She loves spending time with her kids, although she has to hide the computer from them when she is writing! She love being active and being outdoors, especially if it involves any kind of shopping. She has always been passionate about writing. She loves to read romance books and feels like being able to lose yourself in a book is one of the more exciting aspects. The books she loves to read and write will be ones that make you feel for the characters. Alexis believes that you should have an opinion on every character in a book whether you love them, hate them, or think they are up to something. She also believes that the most important critic is your reader, so she loves to hear from the readers. She wants her fans to be open & talk to her about what they want for the characters in the story, and what they would like to see happen.

When we walk into the store, I can honestly say I have never dreaded shopping more. I know he was right when he said I would need new clothes for his functions, but I hate that he’s buying them for me. In all honesty, I can’t get them myself, but I’ve been independent for so long that it feels like a foreign concept to actually have someone wanting to take care of me.
Once we arrive at the women’s section, I head straight for the clearance rack like I always do. Luke comes up behind me and spins me around to look at him. “What are you doing?”
I look at him with confusion. “Looking for clothes to wear when I’m out with you. Isn’t that what this whole shopping thing is all about?”
“Why in the clearance section, Becca? I’m not sure if you heard me the first time; I don’t care how much it is, you don’t need search through the leftovers.”
“And I told you that this all makes me really uncomfortable. I’m letting you buy me the clothes but I would rather they not cost a fortune. I don’t want you spending tons of money on me, Luke; that’s not why I’m with you.”
He groans in frustration and then narrows his eyes at me. “This is not ‘Pretty Woman’ and you are not a prostitute, but you will let me buy you some damn clothes. Now get away from the fucking clearance rack before I buy the entire store.”
I walk away from it and head toward the rest of the racks with my tail between my legs. Over the next half hour I gather a mixture of dresses, skirts, and shirts and then make my way to the dressing room. Luke hasn’t said a word to me since the argument and I have no idea how to break the silence.
I’m slipping out of the third dress I’d brought in with me when the curtain to the dressing room is pulled open. I yelp in surprise and turn around to see Luke standing in the doorway. “What are you doing in here?” I whisper.
He moves toward me without saying a word, closing the curtain as he makes his way into the tiny room. He backs me against the wall and we’re so close that his breath on my neck is causing me to break out in goose bumps.
“I know you aren’t used to people taking care of you, but you’d better get used to it with me. I take care of what’s mine, and you, Rebecca Chase, are mine.”

Genre: Contemporary Romance
 Release Date: February 10,2014

Katie’s world came crashing down in an instant. Her husband, daughter, and unborn baby. . . all gone in a flash. The life that she’d come to know, gone before she ever really got to live it. With a broken heart, she deals the only way she knows how, by shutting it all off. No communicating, no feelings, just pure nothingness. It’s there that she finds herself healing along with the horses her family rehabilitates. But when Parker McKenzie comes back into her life she’s reminded of all that went wrong, and all that she lost.

A.E. Woodward lives in Vacationland with her husband and two young children. Between her day job and the pursuance of a master’s degree, she wrote her first novel, Imperfectly Perfect. Since then she has written three more novels, Imperfectly Real, Kismet, and Imperfectly Bad.

In the twenty minutes that has passed since my Mom called Parker, the kitchen has become a hub of excitement and confusion. I’m still sitting on the hallway floor. In all the confusion I think I’ve been forgotten. But that’s fine, because I’m really good with being alone. It’s soothing for me to be lonely. That, and listening to all the conversation gives me something else to focus on besides myself. Tommy and Pop eventually join Mom and Stevenson in the kitchen, waiting for Parker. Each of them throw their two cents in as to how this should go down. Tommy insists that he should go with us, saying that Parker can’t handle the responsibility. I appreciate that he’s still trying to look out for my best interests, but the fact of the matter is that Tommy doesn’t know the half of what I need. He goes round with Mom and Pop, but Stevenson stops him. “We need to follow her lead, Tommy.” “I just don’t think her going there with him is the best option right now!” Tommy yells. “Now, I respect your concern, Tommy, and we all appreciate that you want the best for your sister. However, if Katie wants to go alone with Parker then that is what we give her. She needs to be in control of her own recovery. We need to remember that this isn’t about us. She’s an adult, she can make her own choices.” Tommy lets out a sarcastic laugh just before I hear the screen door fling open, the springs creaking in response, and then quickly slamming shut. “What the hell is going on?” Parker asks anxiously. Quickly, Stevenson fills Parker in on my request. He adds that Parker shouldn’t feel pressured, especially if he’s not comfortable with the situation, but that he needs to understand how huge this could be for my treatment. “Why me?” he questions. “I dunno, Parker,” Tommy barks. “Why you?” There’s a brief, awkward silence before Stevenson clears his throat and continues to speak. “Obviously Katie knows you well enough to know that you’ll be there for her, while allowing her enough independence to cope with it on her own terms. She’s trusting you,” Stevenson says without emotion. “I don’t know if I can do this,” he mutters. Experience tells me that he’s most likely running his hands through his hair. He always does when he’s nervous. A fist slams against the table, making me jump out of my skin. “You’re right, you can’t!” “Tommy!” Mom scolds. A few more moments of awkward silence pass. I can only imagine the looks that are being thrown in that kitchen. The tension is surely raising a few questions in everyone’s mind. “I just don’t think this is the best idea,” Tommy speaks quietly. “You’re in over your head, Park.” “We’ve been here before, Tommy,” Parker reminds him. “Exactly.”
