Hottest Mess is definitely not a standalone. So before reading it go buy Dirtiest Secret. This series, however, can be read as a standalone series. The characters know the Starks and all of the other characters, but you don't really need to know the backstory there in order to read this book. I love the other series as well and highly recommend them, but I think they can be read out of order, just not the particular books in each series.
Hottest Mess is the continuation of the story of Dallas and Jane. For reasons revealed in the first book the two need to keep their relationship secret. They've both been through childhood trauma and have now fallen in love. But there are secrets that can destroy them.
Let me just say that I love Dallas Sykes. I said before that I love all of J. Kenner's male "heroes," but Dallas has got to be my favorite one so far. He's a contradiction. He's a playboy, but he's really not. He's strong and dominant, but he's somewhat insecure. What he is, is a man who has gone through some terrible things. He lives for two things in his life - revenge and Jane.
Jane's trust issues come into play in this book a little more. She wants no secrets. She's strong, but she's apprehensive. She loves Dallas, but she's afraid.
Hottest Mess ends with a big cliffhanger. I always want the next book in a series to come out, but this one is even bigger. I need the next book soon.
